Wednesday 18th November 2020

Hello everyone,

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been one of the most challenging years in our lifetimes - we have all been affected by the pandemic on many levels - and of course global industry and the economy has taken a massive hit which it continues to reel from.

From a UK standpoint, the latest analysis from ITSA, representing UK connector and component companies supplying into the UK electronics industry, shows that the pandemic has continued to have an ongoing impact on the UK electronics industry. However, there has been growth in certain sectors, with medical reporting an 83% increase in billings and the communications sector up by 37% which, in ITSA’s opinion, reflects the need for more bandwidth for home and remote working.

Most manufacturers maintained a positive outlook for the year ahead with 60% expecting output to be higher in 12 months from now. This optimism has to be tempered in view of the escalating COVID 19 spike and further local and national lockdowns, however, recent announcements that several vaccines have reported high rates of effectiveness and could be available by the end of the year is surely a major positive breakthrough and will hopefully mean recovery can begin early in 2021.

While 2020 has not been the year anyone could have anticipated, it's possible that some companies will emerge from this crisis even stronger. The pandemic forced many to adapt at speed and innovate new methods and technologies under pressure - those that did this now have long term strategies in place that have not just mitigated negative effects but may invigorate their business in the new normal, whatever shape that takes.

Have a great week,
